Topic Workers’ Compensation

Joel will give an update on what’s happening with the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Assessment Commission (A global perspective of the different types of fraud seen by the commission. How the fraud has been addressed, successes and failures, and what the future holds) and wrap up with three things Safety professionals need to know about Worker’s Compensation. 

Speaker Joel Sherman – VP of Safety & Corporate Affairs, Grimmway Farms

Joel Sherman is the VP of Safety and Corporate Affairs for Grimmway Farms, a large vegetable grower/packer/shipper based in Kern County, California. Mr. Sherman oversees three departments responsible for the safety and workers’ compensation issues for more than 7,500 employees and contract laborers.

A graduate of California State University Bakersfield, Joel has more than thirty years’ experience in the safety and workers’ compensation field.  He has served in a variety of capacities including claims adjuster, loss control consultant, policy services representative, and as the workers’ compensation liaison for a large industrial medicine practice.   A certified self-insurance administrator, Joel presently teaches Introduction to Workers’ Compensation at CSUB.  He was the Chairman of the board of directors of the California Coalition on Workers’ Compensation (CCWC) for 2009 and 2010 and was recently elected to the board of directors of the California Self-Insurance Association (CSIA).  Actively involved in the comp reforms of 2004, he continues to participate in legislative reform of the system.  In December of 2010, Governor Schwarzeneggar appointed him to the Fraud Assessment Commission.  Joel was also recently invited to participate in the Agricultural Sector of the NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda, and is a member of the Cal/OSHA Advisory Committee.

A published novelist and short story author, Joel has been a presenter, or acted as panel moderator, at numerous business and educational seminars.  He lives in Bakersfield with his wife and two daughters. He is a Past President of the Bakersfield Chapter of ASSP.
