Safety Manager

E.M. Tharp, Inc is a Peterbilt Truck Dealership with locations in Porterville, Fresno and Bakersfield CA. All facilities have working service centers, body shops and parts department. In addition E.M. Tharp owns Viking Trailers and Kroeger Equipment.

In this position the Safety Manager will be based out of the Porterville store but required to travel between all locations on a weekly basis. This position is responsible for monitoring the working conditions at every location to ensure each location is compliant with State and Federal safety regulations. This job includes enforcing company health and safety guidelines, inspecting work spaces, providing workplace safety training and training new employees on various safety items. The Safety Manager will lead safety-training tail gate sessions for employees and conduct safety inspections on a bi-weekly basis. Work with CalOsha Regulation, DMV programs, fleet management and must be a certified forklift instructor. The successful candidate must have strong computer skills to be able to track programs as needed.

The Safety Manager also works with managers and employees on vehicle safety and monitors the company fleet to ensure the fleet is in good working condition.

  • Oversees use of dangerous chemicals and machinery.
  • Writes up reports detailing inspection process.
  • Recalls defective and unsafe products and machinery.
  • Orders safety gear and supplies for workplace.
  • Stays up to date on new State and Federal health and safety regulations.
  • Consults with company managers regarding implementation of new safety procedures.
  • Addresses any workplace related health issues or accidents.
  • Writes and revises company safety handbook and programs.
  • Trains all new employees in safety practices

Environmental Compliance Program Oversee the Environmental Compliance Program Maintain the chemical inventory at each location

  • Oversee the Hazmat Waste at each location and the proper disposal of the Waste
  • Inspect locations for compliance
  • Maintain site maps
  • Oversee yearly Fire Extinguisher and Fire Sprinkler inspection for each location
  • Oversee and organize the Fire suppression system on the paint booths at all locations
  • Meet with the inspector of Waste tires annually
  • Train on and keep IPP up to date
  • Maintain accurate records on vehicle Maintenace and repair to ensure a safe fleet
  • Train employees on safe driving procedures and keep accurate records on employee insurance programs to include assisting with DMV pull program requirements for Class A, B & C drivers and all DOT requirements
  • Conduct forklift certification classes and certify and re-certify employees on forklift operations.
  • Arrange for repairs to forklifts when needed.
  • Arrange for repairs to any fleet vehicles when needed.
  • Certified CPR trainer a plus
  • Duties as assigned

A minimum of 5 years of progressive safety management experience is required, and the successful candidate must be certified as a forklift instructor and be able to conduct or manage CPR training. The candidate must also have good computer skills including the use of Excel. A company vehicle will be provided for work purposes. Pay will be based on experience but will be based on the posted amount.
